In contrast to my last post (Poor Pakistan) I am absolutely delighted with the tremendous response that is being shown by employers across Sydney in reply to NOVA's 'Focus on Ability' campaigns. It looks as though we will find almost as many job opportunities in this month (September '10) as we achieved in the FIRST THREE YEARS of our operations!
How cool is that!
So, the obvious question that needs to be addressed is why so much success?
My answer would be that for a variety of reasons we are getting a lot better at answering the most important employment questions: Will hiring a NOVA job seeker benefit my business and, if you say it will, in what ways?
So far this year more than 550 business owners have found that hiring a person who identifies as having a disability is no different from hiring any other good employee. There's the hiring process, in which both parties get to know each other, there's training and integration into the new team and then there's the work required to achieve profitable return on the relationship.
I don't see any difference there between people who do and who do not have a disability. Incidentally, NOVA employs a significant number (close to 30%) of workers that identify as having a disability and these workers are amongst our most productive.
So, here's the message for anyone presently thinking of hiring a new employee:
Our advertising, the sales skills of my staff, the good intentions and the very best wishes of first class employers may help but at the end of the process if your business isn't making money from the people you hire, then they are taking money from you that you both need and deserve.
That won't work.
Fortunately we are building partnerships with businesses that see profit and value in pretty quick time. We have a large pool of potential candidates that are motivated and keen to prove their worth and we have a large and experienced team of consultants that are very keen to work with you to achieve a long term partnership that will see possibly many successes.
I believe that the results we are achieving are a clear indicator of 2 things:
1. The readiness of Australian business to take a long hard look at the enormous talent pool available amongst the community of people that have a disability &
2. The drive and desire of our registrants to make their mark and to justify their inclusion and participation in that noblest of roles: taxpayer!

Today marks the first day of a new Disability Employment Service (DES) contract.
There are new players and new rules....
'It's nice to be busy' and 'busy is better than idle' and all of my mum's other sayings about work being good for you, and all of them said; we're drowning!
The administrative burden of a new Disability Employment Service contract (starts July 1st) and the mountains of paperwork required for an NDIS dollar (approximately 10X that of the former TTW program) has seen us add 3 extra staff to the admin team and we are still receiving a large volume of enquiries that are causing us some time delay in getting back to folk....
Podcasts I've been learning all about Podcasts (I suspect that this may be a long road!)
However, getting paid to be inspired is not the worst way to spend a Monday afternoon and that is just how my day has gone....
I am truly fortunate to work with the very best people in this great nation and we are truly lucky to be part of the best short film festival this side of anywhere!

NOVA employs around 190 people, an effective and experienced team who are able to draw upon a staff of highly skilled trainers and a support program honed over almost 30 years and tens of thousands of participants....
Your Work There was never any doubt in my mind that I would work. My dad told me I would work and there wasn't ever a suggestion that my future held an alternative option....
