Copied from today's ninemsn (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2013/07/28/09/57/alp-considers-sending-job-seekers-to-boot-camp):
The Rudd government is reportedly considering forcing young job seekers to enter army-style boot camps in order to qualify for dole payments.
Ministers Bill Shorten and Kate Ellis have tabled a Youth Start Boot Camp potential election policy for the consideration of the ALP's expenditure review committee, Fairfax Media reports.
The discipline-focused camps were reportedly expected to be a vote winner for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in the lead-up to the election.
They have AN idea.
Or, we could think about what we're doing BEFORE we take action!
The assumptions behind nonsense like this are faulty:
1. There is work but young people are too lazy to get same. Rubbish, there MAY be work but young people by their nature lack experience and skills and these are frequently the very characteristics employers seek.
2. By exerting pressure at the supply side you can create demand. Maybe, but the only way this might work is to reduce the cost of supply (lower wages) and that's both illegal and counter-productive.
This sort of stuff may sound good in a sound grab, but it is simply a call to knee-jerk reactions that suggest there is something wrong with our young folk.
There's not. The young men and women I work with and spend time with on a daily basis are keen, motivated and ready to work their guts out if given a chance.
Time, effort and money would be better spent advertising the value and worth young people offer 'as is' would be a better idea and up skilling, supporting and promoting them on the basis of their ability rather than some imagined lack a far better use of resource.
Young people who are unemployed aren't the greedy selfish lazy recipients of government largess, they can't vote themselves pay rises greater than average wages and they most certainly don't want to have their lives made more difficult by ill considered nonsense like this.
Good government calls for considered policy that isn't designed for short term votes but supports a long term investment in our nations most precious asset - our youngsters.
