Just received a truly tragic indictment of the nonsense that permeates Australia’s disability employment services.
A paper promoting the discount price of minimum hour work for people with disability.
What are these people thinking of?
Devaluation can take many forms but systemic devaluation must be the worst possible thing we can sanction – almost guaranteed to ensure people with disability are permanently isolated from full participation.
Note: Yes, I am sure that there are some people who not only simply seek 8hrs a week’s worth of work, that’s all they are capable of etc. etc. (please don’t write me)
So that rubbish is out the way and now…
Many years ago the late Marc Gold set at least 15hrs worth of work per week as the minimum permissible in support of integration and participation.
NOVA maintains that standard for internal KPI’s – staff can place people at 8hrs a week and good on them and we don’t count that job until the hours are 15+
However, if your backgrounds working or running a sheltered workshop you are going to have a very different view – you’ll aim low, you have little by way of expectation people are a commodity and that’s not the foundation for success.
Marketing by subsidy (‘this bloke’s so cheap, he/she’s giving away their labour’) is a tragic response to the need for better integration and full participation/acceptance in Australian society.
These people can’t help themselves; they know no better - the problem’s in the system
That’s why Australia has slipped so badly against other developed economies – that’s why we’re last in the OECD report on poverty and participation.
For God’s sake somebody: include hours worked, wages earned and reduction in benefit as the KPI’s not 'we gave away the Commonwealth’s money by way of subsidising the labour of people with disability, skimming the profit and generally screwing up the labour market'.
Today would be a good day to start.

Whats wrong with Employment Services? There's rumours of a shake-up in the Job Active program - word is, the program isn't making a real difference and employers don't like it!

Today marks the first day of a new Disability Employment Service (DES) contract.
There are new players and new rules....
'It's nice to be busy' and 'busy is better than idle' and all of my mum's other sayings about work being good for you, and all of them said; we're drowning!
The administrative burden of a new Disability Employment Service contract (starts July 1st) and the mountains of paperwork required for an NDIS dollar (approximately 10X that of the former TTW program) has seen us add 3 extra staff to the admin team and we are still receiving a large volume of enquiries that are causing us some time delay in getting back to folk....

However, getting paid to be inspired is not the worst way to spend a Monday afternoon and that is just how my day has gone....

NOVA employs around 190 people, an effective and experienced team who are able to draw upon a staff of highly skilled trainers and a support program honed over almost 30 years and tens of thousands of participants....
Your Work There was never any doubt in my mind that I would work. My dad told me I would work and there wasn't ever a suggestion that my future held an alternative option....
